The Hidden Risks of Aluminum in Deodorant—and a Natural Alternative 🌿

Did you know that your everyday deodorant might contain aluminum—a metal that some studies suggest could have potential health implications? Today, we want to shed light on why aluminum is commonly used in deodorants and how it might be affecting your well-being.

Why Is Aluminum in Your Deodorant?

Aluminum compounds are frequently found in antiperspirants because they temporarily block sweat ducts, reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. This can help you feel drier throughout the day. However, this also means interfering with your body’s natural process of perspiration, which is essential for regulating body temperature and eliminating toxins.

How Could Aluminum Be Harming You?

While research is ongoing, some studies have raised concerns about the potential effects of aluminum on health:

Neurological Concerns: Some research has explored a possible link between aluminum exposure and neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Although findings are not conclusive, the presence of aluminum in brain tissues has prompted further investigation.

Hormonal Disruption: Aluminum may mimic estrogen, potentially disrupting hormonal balance. This is significant because estrogen can influence the growth of certain types of breast cancer cells.

Skin Irritation: Aluminum can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals, leading to discomfort or dermatitis.

It’s important to note that while these studies highlight potential risks, definitive conclusions have yet to be reached. However, many people prefer to minimize their exposure to aluminum as a precaution.

Introducing Dab Up: Your Aluminum-Free Solution

At Community Roots Natural, we’re committed to offering products that prioritize your health without compromise. That’s why we’ve created Dab Up, our natural, aluminum-free deodorant designed with your well-being in mind.

Choosing an aluminum-free deodorant like Dab Up offers several benefits:

Peace of Mind: Reduce potential exposure to aluminum and associated health concerns.

Our Journey to Wellness: The Story Behind Community Roots Natural

Today, we’d like to share a personal story with you—the story of how Community Roots Natural came to life.

In 2021, our family, like many others, found ourselves caught in a relentless cycle of colds and sniffles. Our kids would often bring home illnesses from daycare and hockey practice, and it seemed like just as one bug left, another one arrived. Coming off the heels of the pandemic, every cough and sneeze carried an added layer of concern and stigma.

Two people in a nice kitchen

Determined to break this cycle and boost our immune systems naturally, we turned to our trusted naturopath for guidance. That’s when we discovered the remarkable benefits of elderberry syrup. However, sourcing a high-quality syrup proved to be a challenge. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands—we sourced organic elderberries and other wholesome ingredients to craft our own elderberry syrup at home.

The difference was astounding. Within weeks, the constant stream of illnesses slowed dramatically. Even when colds swept through the daycare, our kids either remained healthy or experienced only mild symptoms. Encouraged by these results, we shared our syrup with friends and neighbors, who reported similar positive experiences.

The original Clariberry Elderberry Syrup

By 2023, fueled by the amazing feedback and a desire to help more families, we decided to make our elderberry syrup available for purchase. The outpouring of support has been incredible, and we’re grateful for each and every one of you who has joined us on this journey toward better health.

But our mission doesn’t stop there. We’re continually exploring new ways to promote wellness through natural products. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Dab Up, our natural, aluminum-free deodorant. It’s another step toward embracing products that are kind to our bodies and the environment.

Thank you for being a part of our story. Your trust and support inspire us every day to keep growing and serving our community with products rooted in nature and crafted with love.

There are many reasons people take elderberry either at their own discretion or as advised by a naturopathic doctor, but the most popular uses for Elderberry Syrup are:

  • Cold and Flu Symptom Relief
  • Immune Support / Illness prevention
  • Allergy Symptom Relief
  • Heart Health
  • Skin Health
  • Culinary Uses

We will look at these and other uses for using Elderberry Syrup in more detail.

Cold and Flu Relief

The are many studies that have been conducted showing the benefits of using Elderberry Syrup at the first sign of a cold. There are several scientific studies that show Elderberry Syrup can reduce cold symptoms by up to 4 days! Many people find elderberry syrup helps them recover quicker from a cold and seems to be the most popular use for elderberry syrup.

Immune System Support

Next to cold recovery, Cold and Flu prevention is the second most common reason people consume elderberry syrup (daily). Known for its immune-boosting properties, elderberry syrup is a favorite during cold and flu seasons. It’s believed to stimulate the body’s immune response, potentially reducing the duration and severity of symptoms.

Allergy Relief

Elderberry syrup has gained attention for its potential in alleviating allergy symptoms, an increasingly common concern. Allergies, triggered by the body’s immune response to allergens, can cause discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Elderberry’s anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties may play a role in soothing these reactions. A study published in the “Journal of Functional Foods” (2016) found that elderberry could reduce the severity and duration of allergy symptoms.

Heart Health

Elderberry syrup’s potential benefits for heart health are increasingly recognized. Its high antioxidant content may aid in regulating cholesterol levels and improving circulation, which are key factors in heart health. For instance, a study published in the “Journal of Nutrition” highlighted the positive effects of elderberry on cholesterol and blood sugar levels, two significant markers for heart health.

Additionally, elderberry’s anti-inflammatory properties, as noted in research from the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology,” could contribute to cardiovascular well-being. These studies suggest elderberry syrup as a promising natural approach for heart health, although further research is needed to fully establish its role in cardiovascular care.

Elderberry Syrup & Skin Health

Elderberry syrup’s benefits extend to skin health as well. This natural remedy is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion. Vitamins like A and C, found in elderberries, are known for their skin-friendly properties. They help in protecting the skin from environmental damage and aid in skin regeneration. A study published in the “Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology” highlights the role of these vitamins in improving skin health. Additionally, the antioxidants in elderberry can help in combating oxidative stress, a factor in skin aging.

Mental Health

Elderberry syrup might have benefits for mental health too. The antioxidants in it, which are good for the brain, could help lower stress and improve mood. There’s not a lot of direct research on elderberry syrup and mental health yet, but studies on antioxidants show they can be good for the brain and mood. For example, research in nutritional psychiatry suggests that eating foods with antioxidants might help with mood disorders. So, elderberry syrup, being rich in antioxidants, could be helpful for mental well-being, although more research is needed in this area.

Digestive Aid

Elderberry syrup might also be good for digestive health. It has fiber, which helps with digestion and keeping the gut healthy. A study in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” found that elderberries have dietary fiber that can aid digestion. While this is promising, more research is needed to fully understand how elderberry syrup specifically helps with digestive health. But its fiber content makes it a potential natural aid for keeping your digestive system running smoothly.

Elderberry is an Anti inflammatory

Elderberry syrup is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for reducing inflammation in the body. This is important because chronic inflammation is linked to many health issues. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” showed that elderberry can help reduce inflammation. This makes elderberry syrup a potential natural option for managing conditions associated with inflammation, although more research is needed to fully understand its effects.

Elderberry syrup is great in the kitchen, not just for health. It’s sweet and a little tangy, so it’s good in teas, smoothies, and on yogurt. You can also bake with it, like in muffins or pancakes. It’s even tasty in salad dressings or as a glaze for meat. Plus, its deep color looks great in food. Elderberry syrup is fun for cooking and adds both flavor and a health boost to your meals.

Can Elderberries Prevent Your Next Cold? Here’s What the Science Says

feeling unwell, catching cold, flu and temperature, looking
feeling unwell, catching cold, flu and temperature, looking

Elderberries have been a topic of interest in the world of natural remedies, particularly regarding their impact on colds and flu. Here, are seven mainstream scientific studies on elderberry and their findings.

Study #1

Sambucus ebulus Fruits Modulate Inflammation and Complement System Activity in Humans (PubMed 2023)

This study looked at a drink made from Sambucus ebulus (Elderberries), known for its health benefits. The elderberry drink contains high levels of anthocyanins, which are beneficial for health because they are potent antioxidants that can reduce inflammation among many other things. The research aimed to see how this drink affects blood markers related to inflammation and immune system health. Fifty-three healthy people drank it for four weeks, and their blood was tested before and after to see any changes.

After drinking the Elderberry drink, levels of certain inflammation markers in the blood, such as IL-6, TNFα, and IL-8, went down. This suggests the drink might reduce inflammation. The study also found that men and women reacted differently; for example, the decrease in IL-6 was more noticeable in men. The drink also affected the complement system, a key part of the immune response, by lowering levels of components like C3 and C4. These results show that the elderberry drink might help regulate the immune system.

The study found a small increase in lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell), but no major changes in other blood cell counts. This suggests that the elderberry drink’s effects are more specific to inflammation and immune processes rather than broadly affecting all blood cells. These findings are encouraging for understanding how natural products like elderberry can help manage inflammation and immune responses.

Study #2

Elderberry Supplementation Reduces Cold Duration and Symptoms in Air-Travellers (PubMed 2016)

The study was a Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial” focused on the effects of elderberry on colds during air travel. It involved 312 economy class passengers traveling from Australia to overseas. The study found that those who took elderberry supplements had shorter and less severe colds compared to the placebo group.

The participants were divided into two groups: one group received elderberry supplements, and the other received a placebo. The study monitored the participants for cold symptoms and their duration during the trip and for a few days after their return. The researchers assessed various factors, including the severity of cold symptoms and the overall impact on the participants’ health. This study suggests that elderberry can be beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of colds in air travelers.

Study #3

Randomized Study of the Efficacy and Safety of Oral Elderberry Extract (PubMed 2004)

In this study, researchers examined the effects of elderberry syrup on patients suffering from influenza A and B. They recruited 60 individuals exhibiting flu symptoms and divided them into two groups. One group received elderberry syrup, while the other was given a placebo. The study aimed to assess how quickly patients recovered from their symptoms with elderberry treatment compared to those who received the placebo.

The findings were quite promising for the elderberry group. Those who took elderberry syrup experienced significant improvement in their symptoms, on average, about four days earlier than those in the placebo group. This quicker recovery suggests that elderberry syrup could be an effective treatment for reducing the duration of influenza symptoms.

Furthermore, the study observed that participants in the elderberry group relied less on additional medications, indicating the syrup’s standalone effectiveness in managing flu symptoms. This aspect of the study highlights elderberry’s potential as a more natural, self-sufficient remedy for flu treatment.

Study #4

Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) Supplementation Effectively Treats Upper Respiratory Symptoms (Science Direct 2019)

The research involved a total of 180 participants, and they evaluated factors like vaccination status and the cause of respiratory symptoms. The results showed that supplementation with black elderberry substantially reduced the duration and severity of upper respiratory symptoms. This suggests that elderberry could be a safer alternative to antibiotics and prescription drugs for treating common cold and flu symptoms.

Girl holds in hands clusters fruit black elderberry (Sambucus nigra). Elder, black elder. European black elderberry background

Elderberries contain active chemicals that boost immune function and have antiviral effects. This study is the first meta-analysis on the effects of elderberry supplementation for upper respiratory symptoms. It found that elderberry supplementation significantly reduces symptom duration. Importantly, it appears to work effectively against symptoms caused by the influenza virus.

Study #5

Elderberry for Prevention and Treatment of Viral Respiratory Illnesses (PubMed 2021)

This study aimed to investigate the use of elderberry for preventing and treating viral respiratory infections, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers conducted a systematic review, searching various sources for relevant studies. They analyzed five randomized trials on elderberry supplements and viral respiratory illnesses.

The results suggested that elderberry may not prevent the common cold, but it might reduce the duration and severity of colds, although the evidence was uncertain. There was also uncertain evidence regarding elderberry’s effect on influenza duration. However, elderberry-containing products appeared to have a lower risk of influenza complications and adverse events compared to oseltamivir.

In conclusion, elderberry could be considered a safe option for treating viral respiratory illnesses, with no evidence of overstimulating the immune system. However, the study emphasized that the evidence on both benefits and harms remains uncertain, and more research from recent and ongoing studies is needed for conclusive conclusions. In short, some of the randomized trials observed suggested a benefit, while others did not.

Study #6

Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) supplementation effectively treats upper respiratory symptoms (PubMed 2018)

Researchers conducted a study to explore alternatives to traditional treatments like over-the-counter medications, antibiotics, and antivirals for upper respiratory symptoms associated with colds and flu. The focus was on black elderberry (Sambucus nigra), a natural remedy. This study, a meta-analysis, included 180 participants and aimed to assess the effectiveness of elderberry supplements in reducing these symptoms. The analysis also considered factors such as the vaccination status of participants and the specific causes of their respiratory symptoms.

The study concluded that elderberry supplements significantly reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory symptoms. This suggests that elderberry could be a more sustainable and safer alternative to conventional medications, especially for common colds and flu.

Study #7

Polysaccharides from European Black Elderberry Extract  (PubMed 2022)

The study is about European black elderberry, a plant often linked to cold and flu relief. Researchers wanted to see if and how its extracts affect the immune system. They tested two types: a water extract (EC15) and an alcoholic extract (EE25), specifically looking at the parts of these extracts called polysaccharides, which are a type of carbohydrate.

Girl holds in hands clusters fruit black elderberry (Sambucus nigra). Elder, black elder. European black elderberry background

They focused on dendritic cells, a key player in the immune system that helps kickstart the body’s defense by activating T cells. The study involved various tests to see how well these elderberry extracts helped dendritic cells mature and, in turn, get T cells ready for action. They also measured cytokines, which are substances secreted by cells of the immune system to communicate and mount a response.

Here’s where it gets interesting. The water-based elderberry extract (EC15), especially the parts rich in polysaccharides, did a great job at maturing dendritic cells and boosting their ability to activate T cells. The alcohol-based extract (EE25), however, didn’t show these benefits. Plus, there was a noticeable increase in cytokines with the water extract, indicating a stronger immune response.

This study suggests that certain elements in the water-based elderberry extract could be effective in enhancing our immune response, particularly against common infections like colds and flu. The alcoholic extract, on the other hand, didn’t exhibit these positive effects.

Final Thoughts

The current evidence suggests that elderberry could be a useful addition to cold and flu treatment regimens, particularly in the early stages, or for reducing the severity of symptoms. Elderberries, with their rich history in traditional medicine and growing scientific backing, offer an intriguing natural option for those seeking to bolster their defenses against the common cold and flu.

As with any alternative treatment, it’s crucial to consult healthcare professionals before incorporating elderberry into your health regimen, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions or those taking other medications.

Introduction to Elderberry Syrup

Welcome to the world of elderberry syrup, a natural remedy with roots deep in history and supported by contemporary science. Elderberry syrup, derived from the Sambucus nigra plant, has captured the interest of researchers and health enthusiasts alike.

For centuries, elderberries have been valued in traditional medicine for their health benefits. Today, scientific research is beginning to validate some of these ancient claims.

A systematic review conducted on elderberry’s impact on viral respiratory illnesses provides some encouraging insights. While definitive conclusions are yet to be made, studies suggest that elderberry syrup may help reduce the duration and severity of colds. It’s also been indicated that, compared to standard antiviral drugs, elderberry might be associated with fewer complications in influenza cases.

In a study focusing on the treatment of influenza A and B virus infections, elderberry extract showed potential in reducing symptom duration. These findings point towards elderberry syrup being a beneficial supplement during flu seasons.

It’s important to note, however, that elderberry syrup is a supplement and should be used as part of a balanced health approach. Always consult with healthcare professionals before starting any new supplement.

Elderberry Syrup: The Amazing Health Benefits

Elderberry syrup, derived from the Sambucus plant, has garnered attention for its many potential health benefits, especially during cold season. Let’s have a look at some of the latest research on what Elderberry Syrup can do for you.

Immune Support and Flu Treatment

Elderberry’s most notable claim to fame is its role in supporting the immune system and potentially shortening the duration of flu symptoms. Two studies highlighted elderberry extract’s ability to reduce flu duration compared to a placebo. Elderberry Syrup Benefits | livestrong

it’s intriguing to speculate on the specific mechanisms through which elderberry exerts these effects. One hypothesis could involve the high concentration of flavonoids, particularly anthocyanins, in elderberries. These compounds are known for their antioxidant properties and may play a role in modulating the immune system. They might inhibit the replication of the flu virus or interfere with its ability to enter and infect host cells.

Clusters fruit black elderberry in garden (Sambucus nigra). Common names: elder, black elder, European elder, European elderberry and European black elderberry.

Additionally, elderberry’s immune-boosting properties could be attributed to its general nutritional profile, including high levels of vitamin C and dietary fiber. These nutrients are essential for maintaining overall health and could contribute to a more robust immune response.

Antiviral and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Elderberry has demonstrated antiviral properties against various strains of influenza in vitro, suggesting its potential in treating influenza A and B virus infections. It also exhibits inhibitory activity against human respiratory bacterial pathogens. Randomized study of the efficacy and safety of oral elderberry extract in the treatment of influenza A and B virus infections – PubMed. Furthermore, a systematic review indicates that elderberry may be a safe option for treating viral respiratory illnesses, without overstimulating the immune system. One of the most notable components of elderberry syrup is its flavonoids, including anthocyanins, which are responsible for the berry’s deep purple color. These anthocyanins are potent antioxidants, known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties. They work by combating oxidative stress in the body, which can lead to various chronic diseases. Moreover, these flavonoids have been studied for their potential antiviral effects, particularly in the context of respiratory illnesses.

Nutritional Profile and Cancer-Fighting Properties

Elderberries are rich in polyphenolic flavonoids and antioxidants. They contain vitamins C and E, crucial for immune health. North Carolina State University notes these components also have cancer-fighting properties. In terms of flavonol content, elderberries surpass many other berries, including blackberries and blueberries Elderberry Syrup Benefits | livestrong.

Digestive and Brain Health

Elderberry consumption is associated with digestive system benefits, aiding in gut health and reducing common digestive issues. Additionally, elderberries contribute to brain health and may help in preventing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. This is attributed to their rich anthocyanin content, a type of antioxidant known for supporting cognitive functions Elderberry Syrup Benefits | livestrong.

While elderberry syrup shows promising health benefits, particularly in immune support and antiviral properties, not all studies support these findings and it’s always best to read the included studies to make your own determinations. As always, consult a healthcare professional before incorporating any new supplement into your health regimen.
